Construction Engineering and Management

Introduction

Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) major is multi-disciplinary study, combination of engineering and management fields. Faculty members in CEM program have expertise and conduct research in three signature research areas: Construction Engineering; Engineering Management; and Construction Management.

  • Construction Engineering (CE) is a professional discipline that deals with the designing, planning, construction of infrastructure projects such as roads, tunnels, bridges, airports, railroads, facilities, buildings, dams, utilities and other projects. This section also deals with the material, concrete and steel of the projects.
  • Engineering Management (EM) is the application of management to the practice of engineering. It brings together the technological problem-solving of engineering and the organizational, administrative, and planning abilities of management in order to oversee the operational performance of complex engineering driven enterprises. This section also works on the project contract claims and related practical laws.
  • Construction Management (CM) is a study that uses specialized, project management techniques to oversee the planning, design, and construction of a project, from its beginning to its end. The purpose of CM is to control a project's time, cost and quality.CM is compatible with all project strategies, project delivery systems, including design-bid-build, design-build, CM At-Risk and Public Private Partnerships. Professional construction managers may be reserved for lengthy, large-scale, high budget undertakings (commercial real estate, transportation infrastructure, industrial facilities, and military infrastructure), called capital projects. Building Information Modeling (BIM), Management Information System (MIS) and Sustainability Development (SD) are three new applications that are added to this study during last years.

Several courses are offered in the CEM program in the School of Civil Engineering at University of Tehran which prepares the future leaders in civil engineering and provide all required tools for students to become construction engineers and managers in all areas of the construction industry.
