Geotechnical Engineering

Introduction

Welcome to Geotechnical Engineering program at school of Civil Engineering, University of Tehran. Geotechnical Engineering is one of the major branches of Civil Engineering that employs the principles of soil and rock mechanics to solve real-world problems related to design and construction of foundations and retaining structures, stability analysis of natural and man-made slopes, design of tunnels and earth dams and a variety of other similar problems.
The geotechnical engineering program at University of Tehran has earned the reputation as one of the best programs in the nation and Middle East and offers outstanding research and education opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Our faculty’s broad interest maintains a strong balance between the theoretical, experimental, and numerical aspects of geotechnical engineering. Within this context, fundamental research projects have been conducted to study the problems related to geotechnical earthquake engineering, constitutive behavior of geo-materials, advanced foundation engineering, ground improvement, site investigation, tunnel engineering, rock mechanics, physical and experimental modeling, and computational geomechanics. Furthermore, a variety of mandatory and elective graduate courses have been offered regularly for helping the students to obtain necessary knowledge and experience to perform high-quality research in the mentioned fields.
The group possesses a complex of soil and rock mechanics laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art apparatus such as geotechnical centrifuge, one-degree-of-freedom shaking table, hollow cylinder, etc. The collection of these facilities has made our geotechnical laboratories as one of the highly-equipped centers in the nation, which performs pioneer research projects in conjunction with academy and industry. Moreover, these facilities are extensively used for teaching and educational purposes.
