Introduction

Transportation engineering is the application of technology and scientific principles to the planning, design, operation and management of facilities for any mode of transportation to provide for the safe, efficient, comfortable, economical, and environmentally compatible movement of people and goods. Transportation engineers design and maintain all types of transportation facilities including highways and streets, mass transit systems, railroads, airfields, ports, and harbors.

Graduate study in Road and Transportation Group at the University of Tehran prepares students for a professional, teaching, and research career. Emphasis is on the acquisition of advanced knowledge with regard to planning, design, operations, maintenance, rehabilitation, performance, and evaluation of transportation systems. The program focuses on development of analytic, design, management and problem-solving skills required for public and private sector professional work.

Transportation engineering faculty with diverse backgrounds and research interests teach transportation courses, and their research interests include topics such as:

  • Flexible pavement analysis and design
  • Mechanical testing and characterization of asphalt binders and mixtures
  • Nondestructive testing
  • Transportation system analysis
  • Traffic control
  • Highway safety
  • Traffic operation
  • Accident studies
  • Concrete and RCC pavement analysis and design
  • Railroad infrastructure design, maintenance and management
  • Testing and modeling of aggregates and soils
