The Third Conference on Industry and Civil Engineering was held at the College of Engineering, with a strong and notable presence of industry representatives.

According to the Public Relations Office of the College of Engineering, the three-day conference—organized by the Department of Civil Engineering with the support of industry partners and hosted at Shahid Chamran Hall of the College of Engineering—featured a strong presence of industry representatives. Dr. Hossein Taghados, Chair of the Conference, noted that the event was the result of a collective effort, stating: “The initial idea for this conference was proposed four years ago, and over the past three years, through the efforts of colleagues, faculty members, and students of the Department of Civil Engineering, three editions have been held. The primary objective is to transfer the outcomes of research conducted by faculty members and graduate students to the industry.”
He further announced that 90 papers were presented at the conference, adding: “Of these, 60 papers were presented as posters and 30 papers as oral presentations by students.”
Designed to strengthen sustainable university–industry collaboration, promote applied research, support problem-oriented student ideas and projects, and provide a platform for professional networking and the exchange of practical experience, the event featured a diverse program of scientific, educational, and competitive activities.
Emphasizing the central role of industry in the review process, Dr. Taghados stated: “All papers were reviewed exclusively by industry representatives, with no involvement from the university. The review committee was composed of industry experts, and all scoring and evaluations were conducted by them.”
Elaborating on the conference objectives, he added: “Our goal is to reinforce university–industry relations and place particular emphasis on applied research aimed at addressing the needs of the civil engineering industry. The interactions formed during this conference help identify strengths and weaknesses, enabling the design of applied research aligned with industry challenges within the School.”
He also explained that “all presented papers were derived from student theses and were prepared under the supervision of advisors and co-advisors.”
Regarding the presentation format, Dr. Taghados noted: “To ensure quality and facilitate the practical transfer of concepts within a limited timeframe, presentations were delivered in the form of pre-recorded videos.”
According to the Chair of the Third Conference on Industry and Civil Engineering at the University of Tehran, the event covered ten thematic tracks corresponding to civil engineering specializations, including: Earthquake Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Road and Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, Water Resources Engineering and Management, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Structures, and Coastal, Port, and Marine Structures Engineering.
Comparing this edition with the previous one, he remarked: “In the previous conference, approximately 70 papers were delivered as oral presentations. In this edition, with a stronger emphasis on quality, the number of oral presentations was reduced to 30, organized across several panels.”
Dr. Seyyed Vahid Faghihi, Executive Secretary of the Conference, also presented a brief report, stating: “This conference was designed and planned based on experiences from countries such as Canada and the United States in university–industry collaboration, with the aim of achieving more effective and constructive engagement with industry.”
He added: “Experience-sharing workshops led by industry professionals, alongside academic paper presentation workshops focused on solving industry problems, were held to foster meaningful interaction.”
Dr. Faghihi emphasized that “all papers were submitted to industry solely for the evaluation of their applied aspects,” and noted that “in addition to paper presentations, nine educational workshops were conducted to further familiarize students with industry experience.”
The conference also featured several specialized lectures. In his keynote address, Dr. Reza Akbari, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and Head of the Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization, expressed appreciation to the organizers and underscored the importance of enhanced collaboration between the University of Tehran and the organization, stating: “Given the capabilities and capacity of the University of Tehran and its Department of Civil Engineering, many of the challenges faced by this organization can be addressed.”
At the closing ceremony, final remarks were delivered by Dr. Haravi, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering; Dr. Taghados, Vice Dean for Research and Chair of the Conference; Dr. Alavi, Industry Relations Secretary; Dr. Faghihi, Executive Secretary of the Conference; and Dr. Torabian, Member of the Scientific Committee and Secretary of the Eureka Competition.
Additionally, Dr. Saeid Monir, Scientific Secretary of the Conference, together with Dr. Ebrahimi on behalf of the Scientific Committee, presented the scientific summary of the event, reviewing research achievements, key challenges discussed, and prospects for future university–industry collaboration. During the ceremony, awards were presented to authors of selected papers, outstanding oral and poster presentations, members of academic and industrial policy councils, sponsoring companies, student and university executive teams, and winners of the Student Olympiad.
Recognition was also given to the organizing team of the “Eureka” student competition. Designed as an innovative initiative to introduce high school students to research themes in civil engineering, the Eureka competition has been conducted over the past year through educational and research-based contests. Its final stage was held on Monday at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Tehran, playing a significant role in linking pre-university education with research areas in civil engineering.
